However, a neuroimaging study published in iScience reveals that dogs can differentiate between distinct negative emotions (such as sadness, anger, and fear) purely by looking at a person’s face, without needing sound, smell, or body language.
How the Study Was Conducted
Led by neuroscientists Laura V. Cuaya and Raúl Hernández-Pérez at the University of Vienna in Austria, the study examined brain representations of human emotion in canines:
- Trained Canine Participants: Researchers trained 14 family dogs—including Border Collies and Golden Retrievers—to lie completely still and alert inside a functional MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scanner.
- Visual Stimuli: While inside the scanner, the dogs were shown static 2D images of unfamiliar human faces displaying a range of expressions: happy, neutral, sad, angry, and fearful.
