New Delhi, 16 Sept. 2026: In a major engineering move against single-use plastic waste choking landfills and waterways, global e-commerce giant Amazon is rolling out an innovative packaging alternative: “Extensible Paper.” The newly engineered material replaces plastic air pillows and delivery mailer bags with a curb-recyclable paper that stretches like plastic while remaining 100% repulpable.
What is ‘Extensible Paper’ and How Does It Work?
Traditional kraft paper often tears when stretched over sharp edges or subjected to drop impacts during transit. To solve this, Amazon’s materials science team adapted heavy-duty paper technologies historically reserved for industrial cement and sugar sacks.
- Stretchable and Tear-Resistant: The paper can stretch 5% to 7% before rupturing—roughly two to three times more flexible than conventional paper packaging.
- Proprietary Water-Soluble Coating: Automated packaging machines rely on heat-sealing, which works seamlessly with plastic but typically burns or weakens paper. Amazon developed a specialized, water-soluble barrier coating that allows machines to heat-seal paper packets securely at high speeds. Once discarded, the coating dissolves entirely in water at paper recycling mills, allowing the entire parcel to be processed with regular curbside paper waste.
Rigorously Stress-Tested in the Lab
Before entering fulfillment lines, the material underwent extensive trials in Amazon’s Materials Science Lab:
- Tested against hydraulic burst pressures, dart drop impacts, and severe climate swings (humidity and temperature changes).
- Subjected to a comprehensive 17-point distribution drop simulation, verifying that packets survive mechanical sorting, conveyor falls, and doorstep drops without bursting.
Measurable Environmental Impact
- 288 Million Bags Saved: Automated packing systems in North America eliminated over 288 million plastic delivery bags in 2025 alone.
- Steep Decline in Plastic Shipments: Across North American automated fulfillment operations, orders shipped in single-use plastic packaging dropped from 65% to 37% within a single year.
- 5.4 Million Metric Tons Avoided: Since 2015, Amazon has avoided more than 5.4 million metric tons of packaging material across North America and Europe.
- Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP): Approximately 11% of customer orders are now dispatched without any added exterior Amazon packaging, shipped directly in the manufacturer’s original box.
A Pathway for the E-Commerce Industry
Non-recyclable packaging and thin plastic films represent a disproportionate share of roadside litter and aquatic pollution due to their lack of commercial scrap value. Amazon’s adoption of engineered paper proves that large-scale logistics networks can phase out flexible plastics without compromising supply chain speed or product safety.
The breakthrough puts pressure on other e-commerce, quick-commerce, and logistics platforms worldwide to upgrade their packaging infrastructure and eliminate single-use plastics at the source.
