New Delhi, 06 May, 2026: A historic shift is unfolding in the Indian smartphone market. According to the ‘Smartphone Insights Report 2026’ released by Flipkart and Counterpoint Research, Indian consumers are no longer prioritizing just a better camera or longer battery life. Instead, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become the top priority when purchasing a new device.

In a striking revelation, the report states that 89% of Indians now consider AI features as the most critical factor in their selection process. This trend indicates that smartphones have evolved from mere communication tools into sophisticated personal AI assistants.

Consumers are moving away from traditional technical specifications (like RAM or Processor) toward “experience-based” features that offer smart utility in daily life.

While AI was once a premium-only luxury, buyers in the ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 price bracket are now actively demanding integrated AI capabilities.

This generation primarily utilizes AI for content creation and entertainment, favoring tools like generative AI photo editing and “Magic Erasers.”

Working professionals are leaning toward productivity and planning features, such as automated meeting summaries and AI-driven email drafting.

Female users are increasingly using AI for lifestyle and daily assistance, including advanced health tracking and voice-activated smart scheduling.

Beyond AI, the report highlighted several other interesting consumer behaviors:

64% of Indians now prefer smartphones with vibrant colors and stylish, ergonomic designs.

33% of buyers are utilizing EMI and ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ (BNPL) schemes to upgrade to higher-end, tech-heavy devices.

57% of respondents still consider brand reliability and after-sales service as a decisive factor.

Camera and performance are the top two features for consumers when upgrading their smartphones.

  • 7 out of 10 consumers want smooth, high-quality videos (4K/8K) in their smartphone cameras.
  • 72% of users feel anxious when the battery level is 20% or lower.

89% of users say AI features drive buying decisions, with AI voice assistance coming out as the most used feature.

The importance of financing is also rising, with 43% of users frequently opting for EMI schemes while making purchases.

The 2026 report makes it clear that the mantra for success for smartphone manufacturers is no longer just “Hardware,” but “Intelligent Software.” Moving forward, AI is set to become the defining identity for not just premium phones, but entry-level devices as well.
